AGRA Farming Technologies
Indoor plant factories produce crops more reliably and at a higher quality than the field.
About
AGRA was founded on a straightforward observation: the way we grow food is increasingly expensive, exposed, and unsustainable — and traditional agriculture has no clear path to meeting future global demand. AGRA exists to accelerate the transition to indoor farming, following the same factory model already applied to energy, transport, and manufacturing. Based in Perth, the team is backed by Lotterywest, Woolworths, UWA, and the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
Founder: Alex Montanari
Alex founded AGRA in his final semester at UWA, driven by a mission to tackle climate change through sustainable agriculture. With over four years of experience in controlled environment agriculture, he has consulted on projects for UWA and the Australian Defence Force, previously ran a media production company, and launched an automated home growing product. In 2025, Alex was selected as one of evokeAG's Groundbreakers — a national program recognising Australia's most promising agrifood innovators.
The Problem They're Solving
Agriculture accounts for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, 30% of water withdrawals, and is the leading driver of deforestation — yet yields are declining due to climate volatility, labour shortages, and rising input costs. The world needs 70% more food by 2050. Outdoor farming, as an open system, can't reliably get us there.
What They Do
Indoor plant factories — controlled environments that decouple food production from climate, land, and labour constraints
Cost-competitive production — currently producing lettuce and herbs at the same price as conventional agriculture, with staple crops (wheat, rice, soy) in development
Sustainable output — 90% less land and water use, 70% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, powered by renewables
Franchise model — deploying technology through a franchise network, enabling scale with limited capital, supported by bespoke seeds, nutrients, and software
