Reflection AI, launched just 18 months ago, has raised $2 billion at an $8 billion valuation. Their mission?

To rival OpenAI and DeepMind in creating frontier AI models that are powerful, open, and scalable.

Backed by the likes of Nvidia, Sequoia, and Eric Schmidt, the company is quickly becoming one of the most closely watched startups in the space.

What Makes Reflection AI Different?

  • Open weights: Reflection AI will release model weights for public experimentation.

  • Closed data/code: Datasets and training pipelines will remain private.

  • Mixture-of-Experts infrastructure: Previously seen only at top AI labs.

  • Revenue model: Free for researchers, commercial pricing for enterprise/government.

This hybrid model raises questions: is it truly open, or just another closed shop with good PR?

Strategic Importance

Reflection AI is attempting to:

  • Democratise access to large models

  • Push back against monopolies in frontier AI

  • Influence AI policy and standards globally

But challenges remain in transparency, safety, and scaling.

Reflection AI could change the balance of power in global AI.
